“Declaring War on Christmas”
Each year, Christmas seems to come sooner and sooner. With retailers in a battle to the death over your last Christmas dollar, we have seen the holiday slowly evolve into something else; something infinitely cheaper. Although we watched it change without so much as a word, we now find ourselves angry when someone wishes us a “Happy Holiday”. When they do, we point to the world and as witnesses declare – too little and too late – that the world is waging war on Christmas.
The truth that so many faithful fail to see is that the Christmas that arrives in October is no longer what this holiday was supposed to be. At Asbury Church, in that spirit of wanting something better and holier, we will raise the battle cry. We will declare that there has indeed been a war on Christmas, and it’s time to take it back.
On this, The Second Sunday of Advent, we will remind each other and celebrate the truth that this white washed and sanitized Christmas, awash in big business marketing and profit agendas, needs to be replaced with the transformative and life changing possibility that truly is December 25th. It is our hope that we find the way to come face to face with the reality that the fault of what this season has become lies squarely with us.
We are a diverse family of faith representing a proudly progressive and Wesleyan voice of faith in our community, and we are confident that you will find a faith home with us. Although we believe our drive to welcome others is one of our greatest traits, you may be asking if you fit in… We certainly acknowledge that there are parts of our church that are unfamiliar. It can be said that coming to church is not the easiest or most comfortable of things to start. Church, ultimately, can be a strange place. If you are like most of us, those first few Sundays were a bit of challenge; what should I wear? Do I have to park somewhere special? Will I truly fit in? (Anything you want…. You can park anywhere…Simply Yes.)
Asbury Church, is a church that is open to all (and by all we mean all) and not one where you should worry about your kid (or husband) crying during worship. At our worship you will find people wearing ties and others jeans, and we encourage you to come as you are.
We are committed to making you feel welcome, and assure you that any hesitations you may have in visiting us should and can be tossed aside. If you would like to toss about a question or two before you join us, feel free to contact our pastor directly at PastorScott2007@yahoo.com. We hope you join us, as we are positive that you will not be disappointed in the way that Asbury is rethinking what it means to be a church today.
